Stuart was born in Cornwall and lives on the north coast, close to large dunes, cliffs, mine workings and a beach that is three miles long.
These landscapes have always been a major influence on his work and continue to inspire a life long passion for the many moods within the unique Cornish geography, geology, light, skies and space.
"Sketches and paintings are executed in the studio, from memory and brief on-the-spot notations. In this sense, they are 'abstract' - not directly renditions of the subject. I absorb impressions and note down the colours, shapes and the overall effects. In the paintings that evolve in the studio I am concerned to capture that essential character, rhythm and formal relationship of landscape and not accurate detail."
